She keeps a less than three inked on her arm
to hide the real one from harm
and keep those she brings close
pretty far away

And to make sure they all know it's the real thing
she spills her own love all over it

Hoping that no one notices, hoping that no one will notice that
she's just a pair of masks, one happy and the other oh, so sad
No one sees the difference between those masks
and the face she really has

She's broken and fractured at her fault lines
everyone an arrow that points to the hurt in her eyes
like a map of the wrong place at the wrong time
one that no one will ever get right
to a treasure that everyone wants, but no one can find
in that lost, lonely place those masks leave behind
but no one sees the difference

She's like a fire alarm
People set her off without even considering the lasting harm

I know I should have been more gentle with her then
but she wasn't gentle with me, or anyone else she'd seen
